The Ohio State Fair is one of the largest, most celebrated events in the state. This summer, Marathon Pipe Line, LLC (MPL) added to the celebration. On Saturday, Aug. 3, MPL sponsored 811 Day at the fair to spread the “Call Before You Dig” message and treat its Ohio landowners to an appreciation picnic.

Two excavators with 811 banners welcomed 800 MPL landowners who live in Ohio to the appreciation picnic. During the picnic, landowners had the opportunity to speak face-to-face with MPL employees about pipeline safety and see some of the ways MPL protects its pipelines through interactive education booths. In total, 55 MPL employees participated in the event.

“One of the most eye-opening booths for landowners was the damaged pipe display,” said Lauren Salinski, MPL Communications Specialist.

Two damaged pipe cutouts from past incidents were displayed for guests to look at and touch.

“One pipe had a severe dent and the other had been punctured – both were damaged during field tiling installations,” Salinski explained. “The display showed landowners not only why it is important to call 811, but also demonstrated the strength of our pipelines.”

MPL’s Pipeline Finder app was another popular display at the picnic. Landowners were able to type in their address on a giant iPhone to see their property and where the pipeline crosses it.

“Engagement events like these are a great way to build relationships with our landowners and educate them about pipeline safety,” said Karen Byers, MPL Damage Prevention Supervisor. “We left the picnic confident that we earned the trust of many landowners.”

In addition to the landowner picnic, MPL’s 811 Day included a Central Park takeover where visitors had the opportunity to win prizes at an 811-outreach booth. There was also a photo board where guests could take photos posing as bugs with underground utilities, and a sandbox with underground utilities was available for children to enjoy. The area provided fun activities for the entire family while raising awareness about pipeline safety.

Through the effort of 811 Day at the Ohio State Fair, MPL was able to connect and communicate the “Call Before You Dig” message, as well as MPL’s values, to more than 100,000 people.

“The outreach events we sponsor help MPL continue to earn the trust of the communities in which we operate,” said Salinski. “We’re extremely grateful to all of our employees who demonstrated MPL’s culture in action and made this year’s 811 Day a success.”
